When the handle a person uses on X does not exist on Telegram, look in four more places: the project's Discord, its Reddit, the person's LinkedIn, and the personal website they link in their own X profile. Each one gives you another username, or a way to them, and every username is one more thing to try on Telegram. Verify before you write: a matching name is a lead, not a match.
This picks up where the seven-step method stops. Start there if you have not; what follows is for the people it did not find.
First, how to try a username
Open t.me/ followed by the name in a browser, or type the name into Telegram's search. Telegram usernames allow only letters, digits and underscores, so most names from other platforms need a small edit before they can match. The free Telegram username finder makes these edits for you:
- Dots and hyphens are not allowed. "john.doe" on Discord can only be johndoe or john_doe on Telegram. Try both.
- Try it with and without the project. alex, alex_acme, alexacme. People who work in public often keep a work handle and a personal one.
- Note every candidate. You will check them all at the end, against each other.
1. The project's Discord
A project's Discord is the closest thing it has to a public staff list, if you know where to look.
- Team roles first. Most servers show their staff as a separate group at the top of the member list, under roles such as Team, Core, Founder, Marketing or Community Manager. The unique roles are the useful ones: a server has one Head of Marketing and a hundred moderators.
- Read the announcements, not only the member list. On large servers the member list shows only the people who are online at that moment, so half the team is invisible at any given time. Whoever posts the announcements is staff by definition, and their name is on every post, online or not.
- Open their profiles. Click a name to see the profile. Some people connect their X account to Discord and show it there, which gives you a second handle.
- Try both names on Telegram: the Discord username and the X handle from the profile.
2. The project's Reddit
If the project does any marketing on Reddit, the team has probably used its own usernames there, and people reuse them.
- The project's subreddit. The list of moderators is public, and it is usually the team.
- Official posts and replies. Team members often carry a flair such as Team, Dev or Founder next to their name.
- Launch posts and ask-me-anything threads, where the team answers under its own accounts.
Each username is another candidate for Telegram.
3. LinkedIn
Lower odds, and cheap to try.
- The profile address. The part after linkedin.com/in/ is a name the person chose, and now and then it is exactly their Telegram username. Drop the hyphens and the numbers LinkedIn adds, then try it.
- Their name in Telegram's search. Typing a full name into Telegram's search sometimes brings up the right account, if it has a public username. LinkedIn gives you the full name and the current role, which is also what you check the result against.
4. The personal website in a team member's X profile
When a team member's X handle does not match on Telegram, look at their own X profile, not the project's, and at the website field in particular. Some people put a personal site there. A personal site usually has an about or contact page, and that is where a Telegram tends to be: the person put it there to be reachable.
Before you write, verify
Every method here produces a candidate, not an answer. Usernames collide, and the @alex on Telegram is very likely not the alex from the project's Discord. Check each candidate against the verification signals: the project in the name or bio, a photo that matches their other accounts, a group you share. Three agreeing signals is a match; one is a guess.
Everything here is public: what people chose to show on their own profiles and in a project's public channels. Joining a project's Discord to read its announcements is what the server is for. Messaging every candidate account to ask "is this you?" is not, and it gets an account limited fast on a platform with no patience for anything that looks like a broadcast.
If none of it works
Some people cannot be found on Telegram from public information, and that is the end of it. Write to them where they are, usually X, or reach the team through a colleague you did find. For the full method from the start, including where it stops, go back to how to find someone on Telegram.
Questions people actually ask
How do I find someone's Telegram from their Discord?
Open their Discord profile and try their username on Telegram, with dots removed or replaced by underscores. If the profile shows a connected X account, try that handle too. Team members are easiest to find through the announcements channel, because large servers hide offline members from the member list.
Can I find a Telegram account from a LinkedIn profile?
Sometimes. The custom part of the LinkedIn address occasionally matches the Telegram username, and searching the person's full name in Telegram can bring up the account if it has a public username. Check any result against their photo and current role.
Why doesn't their Telegram username match their X handle?
Handles get taken, and people pick different ones on different platforms. That is why the other places in this guide are worth trying: each one gives you another name the person chose.
What if I still cannot find their Telegram?
Write to them where they are, usually on X, or reach the team through a colleague you did find. Do not guess: messaging the wrong person under your real name is worse than not messaging at all.
Try Coldpitch and skip the manual part
It finds the accounts worth writing to, spots the weak point, digs out who to talk to on Telegram or X, and writes the first message from what it actually found. Less work than doing this by hand, and better leads at the end of it.
